Natureza Morta
Rita Laranja apresenta uma Natureza Morta que, tal como a de Pieter Claesz, reflete a sociedade onde se enquadra, mas ao invés de representar prosperidade, representa o contrário. Vemos sobre uma toalha de mesa amarrotada, um dispensador de azeite, uma taça de mirtilos, umas folhas de espinafre, e lá atrás uma casinha portuguesa. Tudo elementos aparentemente banais e básicos da vida quotidiana, que nos últimos anos se têm tornado cada vez mais inacessíveis. Enquanto que certos elementos encontrados na pintura de Pieter Claesz atingiram o estatuto de luxo por virem de terras exóticas, por serem escassos ou de difícil acesso, os elementos presentes nesta Natureza Morta são produtos bem abundantes e produzidos em Portugal.
Em épocas de crise ou recessão económica o que consideramos luxuoso muda. Quando um bem se torna inalcançável para a maioria, o seu valor simbólico sobe e o seu estatuto como luxo é atingido, neste caso os produtos alimentares e a habitação. Se o básico se torna exclusivo, este converte-se num objeto passível de contemplação estética e de demonstração de estatuto social, mais do que de consumo. E é este contrassenso que a artista tenta evidenciar nesta Natureza Morta.

Natureza Morta
Rita Laranja presents a Still Life which, much like that of Pieter Claesz, reflects the society in which it is situated — but rather than representing prosperity, it portrays the opposite. On a crumpled tablecloth we see an oil dispenser, a bowl of blueberries, a few spinach leaves, and, in the background, a small Portuguese house. All seemingly ordinary, basic elements of daily life that, in recent years, have become increasingly out of reach.
While certain items depicted in Pieter Claesz’s paintings attained luxury status due to their exotic origins, scarcity, or difficulty of access, the elements in this Still Life are all abundant, locally produced goods in Portugal.
In times of crisis or economic recession, our perception of luxury shifts. When a good becomes unattainable for the majority, its symbolic value increases, and it takes on the status of luxury — in this case, food and housing. When the basics become exclusive, they transform into objects of aesthetic contemplation and symbols of social status, rather than items for consumption. It is this contradiction that the artist seeks to highlight in this Still Life.

O seu processo de trabalho próprio é mais pessoal e sentimental; reflete e reinterpreta a tradição e cruza-a com a sua experiência contemporânea, analisando a carência de trabalho manual juntamente com a perda de autenticidade e genuinidade no mundo atual. O seu trabalho de design, apesar de influenciado pelo seu percurso e valores, é mais despersonalizado, focando-se antes em explorar os limites entre o analógico e o digital no design, resultando em abordagens distintas. A Rita trabalha atualmente como freelancer para vários tipos de clientes, dividindo o seu tempo entre o seu trabalho pessoal, design e direção artística.

Rita Laranja is a multidisciplinary designer with a diverse body of work spanning editorial, graphic, and web design, as well as illustration, ceramics, and printmaking. Her personal creative process is more intimate and emotional; it reflects on and reinterprets tradition, blending it with her contemporary experience. She explores the lack of manual craftsmanship alongside the loss of authenticity and genuineness in today’s world. Her design work, while influenced by her background and values, is more impersonal, focusing instead on exploring the boundaries between analogue and digital in design, resulting in distinct approaches. Rita currently works as a freelancer for a variety of clients, dividing her time between personal projects, design, and art direction.
